The L293D is most commonly used to drive motors, although it may also drive any inductive load, such as a relay solenoid or a huge switching power transistor. It can drive four solenoids, four unidirectional DC motors, two bidirectional DC motors, or one stepper motor. The L293D IC has a supply range of 4.5V to 36V and a peak output current of 1.2A per channel, so it works well with most of our motors. The IC also has built-in kick-back diodes to protect against damage when turning the motor off.
