The HMC5883L is a three-axis digital compass used for two primary purposes: measuring the magnetization of a magnetic substance, such as a ferromagnet, or measuring the strength and, in certain situations, the direction of a magnetic field at a point in space. Communication with the HMC5883L is straightforward and takes place via an I2C interface. There is a regulator on board. The HMC5883L sensor and all filtering capacitors are included on the breakout board. All of the power and 2-wire interface pins are routed to a 0.1″ pitch header. The well-known HMC5883L magnetometer chip is used. I2C SCL and SDA pins support IO levels ranging from 3.0V to 5.0V.
