The water flow sensor is used for water heaters and may also function as a flow switch. Straight structure, nylon and glass fiber construction, waterproof, explosion-proof, and heat and cold resistant. Portable and lightweight, with simple installation. Wear-resistant stainless steel ball inside the impeller. Three wire connections are provided: red for positive, black for negative, and yellow for pulse signal.

The Water Flow Sensor for Flow Rate and Volume Measurement with Arduino operates on the Hall effect concept. The Hall effect induces a voltage differential in a conductor transverse to the electric current and perpendicular to the magnetic field. The Hall effect is used in the flow meter by placing a tiny fan/propeller-shaped rotor in the path of the liquid flowing.

Water Flow Sensor for Flow Rate & Volume Measurement using Arduino

The liquid pushes against the rotor’s fins, forcing it to revolve. The rotor’s shaft is linked to a Hall effect sensor. It is made up of a current-flowing coil and a magnet attached to the shaft of the rotor, which induces a voltage/pulse as the rotor revolves. This flow meter produces approximately 4.5 pulses for every liter of liquid that passes through it every minute. This is due to the magnet linked to the rotor shaft altering its magnetic field. Using an Arduino, we count the number of pulses and then use a simple conversion method to get the flow rate in liters per hour (L/hr) and total volume in Litres.
