Introducing the RGB and Gesture Sensor – a compact breakout board featuring a built-in APDS-9960 sensor. This sensor can measure ambient light and colour, detect proximity, and enable touchless gesture sensing. With this sensor, you can easily control a computer, robot, microcontroller, and more with a simple hand gesture. The APDS-9960 is a powerful piece of hardware equipped with UV and IR blocking filters, four separate diodes that are sensitive to different directions, and an I2C compatible interface. The following pins are accessible for your convenience: VL (optional power to IR LED), GND (Ground), VCC (power to APDS-9960 sensor), SDA (I2C data), SCL (I2C clock), and INT (interrupt). The detection range of each APDS-9960 is between 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm).

  • VL Optional power to IR LED if PS jumper is removed.  Must be 3.0 – 4.5V
  • GND = Ground connects to ground on the MCU
  • VCC = Power input.  Connects to 3.3V on the MCU (2.4 – 3.6V)
  • SDA = I2C Data line.  Connects to SDA on MCU
  • SCL = I2C Clock line.  Connects to SCL on MCU
  • INT = Interrupt output active LOW.  Output is an open collector so requires a pull-up resistor. Connects to an interrupt input on the MCU if used.

  • Gesture recognition using reflected IR
  • Digital proximity sensing using reflected IR
  • Separate Red/Green/Blue light intensity sensors
  • Ambient (clear) light intensity sensor
  • IR light-blocking filter
  • Interrupt output available
  • I2C interface with good library support
  • 3.3V operation

  • 1 x APDS-9960 Proximity, Light, RGB and Gesture Sensor
  • 1 x PH2.54 6-pin header
