The VL53L0X V2 is an advanced time-of-flight range-finding sensor that represents a new generation of laser ranging modules. This sensor utilizes a tiny, invisible laser source paired with a corresponding sensor. The VL53L0X measures the “time of flight,” which is the duration for the emitted light to bounce back to the sensor.
Because it employs a very narrow beam of light, the VL53L0X excels at accurately determining the distance to surfaces directly in front of it. Unlike sonar sensors that rely on bouncing ultrasonic waves, the VL53L0X has a tight sensing cone, allowing for precise distance measurements. Additionally, unlike infrared distance sensors that measure the amount of reflected light, the VL53L0X avoids issues with linearity and ‘double imaging,’ which can make it difficult to distinguish between distant and nearby objects.
The VL53L0X sensor can measure distances ranging from approximately 50mm to 1200mm, which is up to 1.2 meters. This small sensor is easy to incorporate into any robotics or interactive project. It operates on 2.8V power and logic, so we’ve placed it on a breakout board that includes a regulator and level shifting. This makes it compatible with any microcontroller that uses 3-5V power or logic, ensuring you can use it without any concerns. Each order comes with a small piece of header pin. Simply solder the header onto your breakout board using a soldering iron and solder, and wire it up for instant distance-sensing success!
Communication with the sensor is achieved via I2C using an API developed by ST, making it relatively straightforward to port to your preferred microcontroller. We have also created a wrapper library for Arduino, allowing you to use it with any compatible Arduino board.
